Did you know there are wellness benefits to writing letters. The old-fashioned way on paper with a pen or pencil (although typing is also therapeutic) can get you beyond what you thought you could not get over.

Letter writing can take a few forms. We are highlighting benefits of  transactional where the writer is intentionally aware of another person; and expressive writing which could be a poem or a story, fictional or real. Both have benefits and either can be used during this Write a Friend Month.

Benefits include

  • a shift in perspective

  • it can make you happier as it can take your mind off whateever may be troubling you at the time and it's a great opportunity to express gratitude or recall a fond memory

  • it creates a memory for the recipient who might hold on to it and re-read it to recapture the feeling of how they felt when receiving the letter

  • it is a way to show how much you cherish and appreciate the relationship

  • it has been around a long time and even now, the excitement of finding a letter written decades or centuries ago can bring a degree of excitement and enlightenment into how life was lived in a previous era

  • it's a great way to ensure everyone is included even those who don't text or read email

  • it's better for the eyes and reduces screen time

  • it reduces isolation and gives you a reason to be excited about the mail

  • sometimes it's easier to write things on paper than to say it aloud

  • it's wicked easy

So why don't you give it a go. Write a letter to a friend or 5 and see the positive impact it has in your life.
